Name Change After Marriage for Seniors and Retirees
The government steps are the same at 70 as at 27, with one advantage: the single SS-5 form updates your Social Security benefit record and your Medicare card at the same time. The extra work is downstream — pensions, retirement accounts, beneficiary designations and the will.
Social Security and Medicare from one form
File the free SS-5 with a certified marriage certificate. If you receive benefits, the payment record updates with the name; Medicare, which runs on the Social Security record, issues a new card in the new name automatically — the Medicare number itself doesn't change. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are separate companies: tell each one directly.
Retirement money
Pension administrators, IRA and 401(k) custodians, and annuity providers each need a name-change form plus the certificate; while you're there, review the beneficiary designations, which pay outside the will and are often left pointing at a former spouse. Required minimum distributions and tax reporting follow the Social Security name, so do those updates after SSA.
ID for travel and REAL ID
Many retirees hold an old license that isn't REAL ID compliant. Since May 2025 a REAL ID (or a passport) is required to board domestic flights, so if you're at the DMV for the name change anyway, bring the REAL ID document set and upgrade in one visit — the REAL ID guide lists it. For cruises and international travel, get the passport reissued in the new name before booking, or book in the current passport name.
Will, trust and everything else
A marriage often revokes or alters a will in some states; update the will, any trust, and powers of attorney with the new name and the new spouse's role. The tracker lists the remaining accounts — insurance, utilities, the DMV vehicle title, veterans' benefits if applicable (the VA needs its own form).

Will my Social Security benefits be interrupted?
No. The SS-5 updates the name on the same record; payments continue. Check the first deposit after the change shows the new name at your bank.
Do I need a new Medicare card?
One is issued automatically after Social Security updates your name; the Medicare number stays the same. Tell Medicare Advantage or Part D insurers separately.
Does marriage affect my will?
In many states marriage revokes or changes a will made before it. Review the will, trust and beneficiary designations after the wedding regardless of the name change.
Do I need a REAL ID?
To fly domestically without a passport, yes. Upgrade during the name-change DMV visit — you'll already be carrying the documents.
