REAL ID and Your Name Change After Marriage
Since May 7, 2025 you need a REAL ID-compliant license (or a passport) to board a domestic flight. A name change is the moment most people upgrade — and the moment the REAL ID rule bites hardest, because the DMV must trace your name from the birth certificate to the one you're asking for.
Name traceability
REAL ID requires the DMV to verify identity from a source document — usually a birth certificate or passport — and that document shows your birth name. Every name change since then has to be linked by a certified document: marriage certificate, divorce decree, court order. One marriage: birth certificate + marriage certificate. A prior marriage and divorce too: birth certificate + first certificate + decree + second certificate. The chain checker builds the list for your history.
Already REAL ID? Not yet?
Already compliant: the name change reissues the card; bring the certificate and current license, and Social Security must already show the new name. Standard license: upgrading and changing the name in one visit is the efficient move — you're carrying the documents anyway — but the document list is longer: identity, Social Security number proof, two proofs of residency in the new name or old (rules vary), plus the chain. Flying between the wedding and the new ID
Book tickets in the name on the ID you'll present. If your license is standard and you're flying before the upgrade, a passport works as REAL ID-equivalent. If the passport is being reissued, don't mail it until after the trip. The honeymoon checker sequences this for a specific date.

Do I have to get a REAL ID when I change my name?
No, but it's the efficient time — you're already at the DMV with most of the documents. Without it you'll need a passport to fly domestically.
What documents prove the name chain?
Certified marriage certificates, divorce decrees with restoration clauses, and court orders, linking each name to the next from your birth certificate. States decide which they accept; the checker lists the usual set.
Does REAL ID need proof of address in the new name?
Most states accept residency proofs in either name as long as the chain explains the difference; some want at least one in the new name. Bring a mix.
Is a passport a substitute?
For flying, yes. For state purposes (voting, licensing) you still need the state ID updated.
