Changing Your Name When You Remarry
You do not have to go back to your maiden name before taking a new spouse's surname. The new marriage certificate authorizes the change directly from whatever your legal name is today — but agencies will want to see the chain of documents behind that name.
The certificate works from your current name
Social Security and the DMV change your name from the one on record to the one on the new certificate. If your record shows a first married name, that's the starting point; the maiden name in between is irrelevant to them. The same is true if you had restored your maiden name after the divorce — the new certificate starts from there.
Keep the chain
Where the history matters is document verification, especially REAL ID: the office wants an unbroken trail from birth certificate to current name. For a remarriage that means: birth certificate → first marriage certificate → divorce decree → second marriage certificate. Keep certified copies of all of them permanently; the chain checker lists what your situation needs.
The order
Unchanged: certified copies, SS-5, wait, license, passport (the passport application asks for all previous names), then everyone else. Your Social Security number and credit history carry through; the credit bureaus add the new name as an alias when lenders report it.
