Name Change After Marriage for Military Spouses
A military spouse runs the same four civilian steps plus one that outranks the passport: DEERS. Until DEERS shows the new name, the dependent ID card, TRICARE and base access all sit on the old one.
The order, with DEERS inserted
- Certified marriage certificate copies — DEERS wants to see one too, so order four.
- Social Security (SS-5), free; wait 24–48 hours.
- DEERS update and new dependent ID card at any RAPIDS ID card office (find one at idco.dmdc.osd.mil). Bring the certificate, your current ID and a second ID; the sponsor must be present or provide a signed DD Form 1172-2. TRICARE reads DEERS, so coverage in the new name follows automatically.
- State driver's license — see below for which state.
- Passport, then banks, employer, the rest.
Which state's license?
Spouses can usually keep the license of their state of legal residence while stationed elsewhere — the Military Spouses Residency Relief Act lets you elect the sponsor's state of residence. A name change, though, has to be processed by the state that issued the license, and most require it in person. If you're far from that state and the license is near expiry, check whether it offers military/overseas mail renewal with a name change; otherwise plan the DMV visit for the next trip back, and use the new passport and dependent ID meanwhile.
PCS and deployment timing
If a PCS is within a couple of months, do Social Security and DEERS before the move (they're federal, location-independent) and the license after you arrive — a new state means a new license anyway, and it can be issued directly in the married name with the certificate. If the sponsor is deploying, get the DD 1172-2 signed before departure so you can update DEERS alone.
Skip the forms — get them filled in 10 minutes
The Name Change Plan Packet (free — your email is the only thing we ask for) asks you the questions once, then generates your completed official forms — SS-5, the right passport form — plus notification letters for your banks and employer, and your state's exact instructions. Built entirely in your browser: your details never touch our servers.

Do I update DEERS before or after Social Security?
After. DEERS verifies against Social Security data, so change SSA first and wait a day or two.
Does TRICARE need a separate name change?
No. TRICARE pulls from DEERS; once DEERS shows the new name, TRICARE follows. Tell your regional contractor only if a claim in the old name gets stuck.
Can I update DEERS without my spouse present?
Yes, with a DD Form 1172-2 signed by the sponsor (notarized or digitally signed), or at some sites with the sponsor's verification by phone.
Which state do I use for my driver's license?
The state that issued it processes the name change. If you're moving, get the new state's license in the married name on arrival instead of changing the old one twice.
