Changing Your Name After Marriage in Australia
Australia has no central ID either, so a name change is the same job as everywhere else in the English-speaking world: one legal document — your marriage certificate — carried through a fixed sequence of agencies, then the long tail of banks and providers. Here is the Australia order, and two free tools to get through it.
The order
- Certified marriage certificate — Order 2–3 certified copies from your state's Births, Deaths and Marriages office — the ceremonial certificate from the wedding is not the legal one. Official site.
- Driver licence — In person at your state licensing agency (Service NSW, VicRoads, TMR and so on) with the BDM certificate. Fees vary by state; some charge nothing for a name change. Official site.
- Passport — A new passport in the new name — an adult 10-year passport is ≈ A$412. Lodge at a participating Post Office with the certificate. You may keep travelling on the old-name passport with tickets in that name. Official site.
- Medicare, ATO and Centrelink via myGov — Update Medicare in your myGov account (new card posted), then the ATO record, then Centrelink if you have one. Official site.

Common questions
Do I have to change my name after marriage in Australia?
No. Taking a spouse's surname is a custom, not a rule — your BDM marriage certificate lets you use either name, and you can switch later without any court process.
Do I need a change of name certificate?
Not for taking a spouse's surname, hyphenating or reverting after divorce — the marriage certificate or divorce order is enough. A registered change of name (through BDM) is only for a name that isn't on either.
How much does it cost?
The passport is the main cost (≈ A$412 for an adult 10-year passport); certificate copies are ≈ A$50–$70 each depending on the state; licence fees vary from free to about A$30. Medicare, ATO and AEC are free.
What about reverting to my maiden name after divorce?
Your divorce order together with your marriage certificate is accepted by the passport office and state licensing agencies. No deed poll or change of name certificate is required.
